Finding UBC

By bus from Downtown: 4; 17; 44; anything to Broadway and take the 99 B-Line

If you’re on a trolley bus (the ones with overhead cables – the 4 or 17) you won’t stop at the bus loop proper but on University Blvd. If you’re walking to the department from here get off the bus and walk in the direction the bus is pointing (more or less) along University Blvd to either Main Mall or West Mall.

Other buses stop at the bus loop which is just past University Blvd (the other side of the hideous concrete admin building). There’s a sports field beside the bus loop, walk around it (either side) and past the Student Union Building which is the building directly across the field from the bus loop. Go left down to University Blvd, turn right and proceed to either Main Mall or West Mall.

By bus along Marine Drive: 41; 43; 49; 480

The stop you want is “Marine Drive”; it’s the first stop after the bus turns from Marine Drive onto 16th Avenue – it’s right after the turn off so pull the cord before you turn! (The preceding stop is “Wesbrook”; after you’ve passed that, pull away!)

Get off and cross 16th; there’s a bus stop (catch the return bus here) and an incline up to a concrete pathway running parallel to a chain link fence. Walk along the pathway back towards Marine Drive; follow the path around the fenced-in area (it’s part of the botanical garden). Once you’ve gone around the garden you can actually see the department across the road that runs on the other side of the garden; yes, that funny looking building on the edge of a field; that’s us! You have to go in the main gate; the building entrance is inside the field.

Finding the Department

(once you’re on campus)

Once people know where we are they usually describe the location with words like “bucolic” or “idyllic”; the first time they try to find us, however, the words are usually more like “God-forsaken” and “middle-of-nowhere”.

From the bus loop (15-20 minutes walk): Go past the Student Union Building; you can turn left down either Main Mall or West Mall; keep going; go some more (when you start to think, “I must have passed it” you’re almost there, keep going!). If you’ve taken Main Mall, it dies out at Thunderbird Blvd; there’s a park-like area across the street; you can cut over to West Mall here. After Thunderbird Blvd on West Mall, you pass two T-intersections on your left; there’s nothing but housing on your left and a big field on your right; you start to feel unsure – keep going!! We’re across from the second T-intersection (Larkin Drive); inside the field. There’s an entrance gate to the field just past the second intersection, go in and we’re the building on your left. You’ve made it!

Food and beverages will be provided for coffee breaks on Saturday 25th, as well as for a coffee break / light lunch on Sunday 26th. In addition, we'll be hosting a party on the Saturday evening which we hope you'll all be able to attend! More information will be posted shortly.

There are a number of dining options on campus for lunch on Saturday 25th, and there will be local students on hand at the conference to point you in the right direction.
