If you are a Mac user, the IPA Palette is a very useful way to insert characters into MS Word, etc.: http://www.blugs.com/IPA/
If you are a windows user, there is a far less useful program available: IPA Character Map for Windows http://www.davidmontero.net/Linguistics.php
If you have not done so, you will need to install Doulos IPA (standard IPA font): http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=DoulosSILfont
There's a font for building phonological structures (syllables, feet), but it isn't free, and it's an awkward solution, in my experience: http://www.cascadilla.com/moraic.html
PRAAT is a very useful tool.
